Most of us enjoy a beautiful sunrise that opens our day to new possibilities. Or a sunset that leads us into rest. We may delight in the night sky sprinkled with stars dancing around a bright moon. Or, one may experience the sun, the moon, and the stars as nothing more than part of the world. But I have yet to meet that one person. The heavens have been crafted impeccably by our Heavenly Father.
“God said, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to divide the day from the night; let them be for signs, seasons, days and years, and let them be for lights in the dome of the sky to give light to the earth”; and that is how it was. God made the two great lights — the larger light to rule the day and the smaller light to rule the night — and the stars. God put them in the dome of the sky to give light to the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness; and God saw it was good.” Genesis 1:14-18 CJB
God created a beautiful celestial sky with two distinct lights, the sun and the moon, to rule the day and night. God did not create the sun and moon or stars to rule us. We were not created to worship them. God has told us to be watchful over our souls and keep ourselves from becoming corrupt.
“For the same reason, do not look up at the sky, at the moon, star and everything in the sky, and be drawn away to worship and serve them; Adonai your God has allotted these to all the people under the entire sky.” Deuteronomy 4:19 CJB
While beautiful and mesmerizing, the sun, moon and stars have no power to protect you. They cannot create, they do not have the ability to love. Do not worship the created, worship the Creator.
“He who made the Pleiades and Orion, who brings deathlike shadows over the morning, who darkens the day into night, who calls for the water in the sea and with it floods the earth—Adonai is His name.” Amos 5:8 CJB
“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars that you set in place— what are mere mortals, that you concern yourself with them; humans, that you watch over them with such care?” Psalm 8:4-5 CJB
As you stand in awe of the rising or setting sun, as you watch the moon wax and wane each month, stop to praise the One who knows the stars by name.
“He determines how many stars there are and calls them all by name” Psalm 147:4
