Many of us have heard this saying. I heard it in my college business classes, and I heard it in the many home-based adventures. If you found yourself in a new job or maybe speaking in front of a large crowd but felt unqualified, you just carried on with feigned confidence. The plan is to convince yourself of your abilities while working towards the competence. The people in front of you don’t know your abilities and if you don’t have them just fake them. Eventually you will possess those needed skills. Positive self talk is good but can cause problems if we do not truly believe it. I faked it while running my small business. That worked for a short time but I had extra inventory and a little bit of debt. My creditors wouldn’t let me fake the payments for that debt. All my positive self talk became negative. Instead of allowing myself to just accept the loss I allowed it to become a part of who I was. This business failed so I was a failure.
How many of us shine our confident faces in public but in private we feel unworthy, less-than, or inferior? We live in a world where comparison can add to our self sorrow. If you post something good on social media, that post will be met with a counter post. If you just got back from the beach, your friend just got back from a private island. If you just got back from a week long cruise, your friend just got back from a month long cruise. If you won a local baking contest, your friend just won a national baking contest. There is so much out there that will take our beautiful small victories and small moments of pleasure and make them just feel small.
Child of God; we do not have to fake who we are, we do not use worldly measures to define us. In the Bible David praised God that he was so awesomely created. And so are we.
“I praise You, for I am awesomely, wonderfully made! Wonderful are Your works— and my soul knows that very well.”
Psalms 139:14 TLV
We have been created in God’s image.
“God created humankind in His image, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them.”
Genesis 1:27 TLV
You don’t have to fake amazing. You are amazing and can have true confidence in who you are. You can overcome disappointments. Your victories big or small are still victories.
You are made in God’s image and you are wonderfully made! Feel it in your soul!
