“By trusting, Abraham obeyed, after being called to go out to a place which God would give him as a possession; indeed, he went out without knowing where he was going” Hebrews 11:8 CJB
I was in a Bible study discussing how we must trust God at all times. One of my friends, Mel M. mentioned scuba diving. I have never been scuba diving so I was fascinated when she said “follow the bubbles”. If a diver becomes disoriented and can’t distinguish between going up or going down; they look at the direction of the bubbles. The bubbles always go up. Now again I have never gone diving so there may be some extenuating circumstances where the bubbles don’t go up; but this simple phrase stuck in my head.
In the Hebrews verse above we see the faith of Abraham. When I read the words “he went out without knowing where he was going”, I wonder if I would be so quick to go. I lean more towards the “ I’m going to need a little more information and time to plan this out”. I tend to see obstacles and mishaps.
Abraham didn’t know what to expect; he just simply followed God’s word. Abraham didn’t need to research his destination. He didn’t need to check the reviews of that land on social media. He didn’t need to ask friends if they had ever been there and advise him on what to expect. Abraham just went.
We don’t always know what to expect in this life. We cannot even accurately predict tomorrow. The past few years have shown us that big changes can happen overnight. There are times we may not know which way is up. But God knows. I like to use the scuba analogy when I am doubting where I’m heading. Sometimes if I just feel discouraged or worried about my future and the future of my kids, I think of it.
If you ever feel like life is out of control or you feel lost and worried about the direction your life is going. Just turn it over to God. Our Heavenly Father knows what we don’t. He loves us so much that He will never lead us astray. Trust God who will always lead us up. Even if we can’t see the surface of the water; He can.
Just follow the bubbles.
